Preliminary voter lists for this year\u2019s commune elections went up around the country on Tuesday, posted outside Cambodia\u2019s 1,633 commune offices and online, according to a statement released by the National Election Committee (NEC).<\/p>\n

The committee said 7,864,429 voters had been registered on a new digital database during a three-month drive earlier this year, about 81 percent of some 9.7 million eligible voters.<\/p>\n

It said that 8,346 names were set to be deleted from the list and that 2,737 had already been erased due to information being left over from a pilot registration program or names being transferred between communes.<\/p>\n

NEC spokesman Hang Puthea could not be reached to explain why the other names would be taken out of the system.<\/p>\n

Apart from checking for their names at commune offices, the statement said, voters could also look at the list online at www.voterlist.org.kh or verify their data by calling 1285 on their telephones, free of charge on Cellcard, Smart and Metfone networks.<\/p>\n

Officials and election observers said the main reason that about 20 percent of eligible voters did not register is because they were working outside the country.<\/p>\n

The CNRP and others complained that the government did not do enough to accommodate migrant workers.<\/p>\n
